Getting to the Neues Museum — and where the entrance really is
The entrance almost everyone looks for first
This is the point where most visitors lose time. They stand in front of the Neues Museum, find no ticket counter and no entrance there, and end up walking all the way around the building. The way in is through the James-Simon-Galerie on Bodestraße, the flat, newer building on the Kupfergraben. Ticket sales and the cloakroom are centrally located there, and from there you continue into the Neues Museum. Anyone with a timed-entry ticket goes straight to the visitor entrance of the James-Simon-Galerie; that's also the meeting point given for the admission tickets as the entry point.
By public transport
The most convenient connection is the Museumsinsel U-Bahn station, which lies directly beneath the island. By S-Bahn, get off at Friedrichstraße or at Hackescher Markt and walk the last few minutes. The tram stops at Am Kupfergraben, just behind Museumsinsel, and also at Hackescher Markt. The bus serves the stop U Museumsinsel . From any of these stops, the James-Simon-Galerie is a few minutes' walk away.
Kolonnadenhof and groups
Two special cases are worth knowing. The Kolonnadenhof, the green inner courtyard between the buildings, is not an open passage: you need a valid ticket for it. And groups don't enter the James-Simon-Galerie via the grand outdoor staircase, but through the lower foyer from the courtyard. If you're on a guided tour, the guide usually waits at a separate meeting point anyway; for the Museum Island Tour, that's at the bottom of the steps in front of the entrance to the Bode-Museum, where the guide wears a visible name badge. Enter Bodestraße in your navigation device, not the Neues Museum. That way you'll arrive on the right side of the island and save yourself the walk around the building.
