When it's worth it
If you have an hour and a half to three hours and you're interested in Egypt, early history or architecture, the visit is easy to justify. The building offers three collections at once, and the walk from the bust of Nefertiti to the Berlin Gold Hat and the Neanderthal skull takes just a few minutes. A second argument that's rarely mentioned: because the Pergamonmuseum is closed, the Neues Museum is currently the building carrying the largest share of the island's antiquity expectations. When it's not worth it
Three cases where we'd advise against it. First: you have less than an hour. Then you'll see the bust, a few sarcophagi and nothing else, and the hassle of a time slot and security check is too much for that. Second: antiquity and early history mean nothing to you. The Neues Museum isn't a building that will change your mind; the Alte Nationalgalerie with 19th-century painting is a hundred meters away. Third: you're coming for the Pergamon Altar. It's in the Pergamonmuseum, which has been closed since October 23, 2023; reopening is announced for June 4, 2027.
